Which tells the story of our town’s history better: A pair of glasses or a license plate? A projector or a bottle of beer? Visit a place where remembering is a communal act, and everyone’s opinion is heard and counted: Beertown. Part-civic ceremony, part-theatrical pageant, dog & pony dc’s Beertown actively explores the dynamic and tenuous relationship between individuals and their community. Beertown received a Helen Hayes nomination for the Charles MacArthur Outstanding New Play or Musical Award! Beertown is “so gently satiric and utterly involving that you’ll find yourself voting for and against issues before you even realize you’ve raised your hand.” – Washington Post.
The performance begins with a dessert potluck; please bring a dessert to share.
Rehearsals and performances have been consuming my time recently, so in an effort to feel validated (an also because it is a kick-butt show) I urge you, my friends, if you are in the DC metro area then buy a ticket and come and see BEERTOWN. This summer we are performing it as part of the Capital Fringe Festival and for more information you can check out the dog and pony dc website. This will most likely be my last show for a while (having twins can have quite an impact on one's stage career, no?) and if this run is anything like the last tickets will see out quickly. So come see it! Buy your tickets now! Support good art! Oh, and there is a dessert potluck buffet, which would be what would really convince me to come see the show.
Hope to see you there.

candy for the eyes and tummy
My friend sent this podcast/article from NPR about Japanese Omanju. If you're a fan of unique sweets, and haven't tried anything like this, I highly recommend it. I'm particularly a fan of chestnut manju. But where to find such treats on the east coast? If you find out, let me know!

Noodles and Tanabata
Few "holidays" are more evocative of summer for me than Tanabata, the Japanese star festival. When we're in Japan we enjoy the festive bamboo decorations with colorful tanzaku (small pieces of paper with wishes written on them) fluttering from the branches. Every town seems to have their own matsuri festival with carnival games, treats and performances... I'm filled with nostalgia just thinking about it and longing to find one in our area.
Though we'll miss out on attending a matsuri this year, at least we can indulge in some summery Japanese treats. One of our favorite summertime dishes is hiyashi somen, a delightful cold noodle dish. There is a great recipe on La Fuji Mama that I am excited to try, mostly because I like the idea of making my own dipping sauce as opposed to purchasing a ready-made sauce (full of MSG).
In the midst of this excruciating heat wave (am I allowed to be that dramatic? I am 5 months pregnant with twins after all...) this seems like the perfect food to prepare and eat. Minimal time over a hot stove and maximum cooling power. A must for tonight's dinner.

something in the water
Pregnancies are miracles.
And there have been a lot of miracles this year! On my city block alone there are six of us sporting baby bumps and most of us are due right around the same time. And even more exciting, MamaM is preggers too. And keeping with the trend, she is also adding a little boy to this go-round.
We're both due about a week apart, if you can believe that. And though we haven't been so good about documenting the bump, here are some relatively recent pics:
Can't wait to see them when they're on the outside!

Yarn Along: beach knitting
Joining Ginny over at Small Things for the regular Wednesday Yarn Along!
Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? ~ Ginny Sheller from Small Things
Few things are lovelier than beach knitting. Upon learning that our two developing in utero are of the male variety, I put aside that very feminine Christening dress and started on some handsome baby sweater vests. Pattern is by Bley Hack and I found it for free on Ravelry. Used up my two skeins of Berlini Ling in a pretty tan color. One down, one to go! My second vest is knitting up quite nicely with a pretty blue cotton yarn from Louisa Harding Yarns. I figure I better get my knitting in now because I surely won't have much free time after the twins arrive.
There hasn't been much time set aside for reading, but I am still making my way through David McCullough's The Greater Journey. I keep meaning to read at night, but on evenings when I'm not in rehearsals I'm usually falling asleep with Mayumi around 8pm. I've always needed a lot of sleep, but gestating twins requires so much rest! And calories! But at least they will be well-dressed!
