Deal of the Day! $20 for $40 Worth of Organic, Natural, Green, and Eco-Friendly Products from Abe's Market

This deal has popped up before and I was tempted to buy it then as I am tempted to buy it now. Groupon is offering a $40 for only $20 to Abe's Market, an on-line retailer of eco-friendly goods. This Groupon is available on the right side bar of the Westchester County, New York page but since it is an on-line deal, anyone nationwide can purchase it.

Before I buy any deals from these social buying sites like Groupon, I always check out the website of the retailer to see if there is anything I actually "need" (because some of us can be more impulsive than we want to admit). I found these stainless steel bento boxes that would be perfect for picnic lunches or in the car when we're out an about.
Right now I am using glass and plastic but the glass is so heavy and the plastic breaks all the time and doesn't really coincide with trying to live a zero-waste lifestyle. I don't know if it is just having a daughter that gets me paranoid about all the chemicals in plastics or just trying to be more environmentally conscious about my waste or a combination of both but I've been trying to slowly make changes to sturdier reusable items and when I see a deal like this, I like to jump on it (you think my husband will buy that?). I also want to make beautiful bento lunches for me and my daughter.

Another thing you want to check out is shipping for these types of deals before you buy. When you factor in shipping, sometimes the deal isn't quite the steal that you thought. According to the Abe's Market website, you can get free shipping on orders over $49 for a limited time or pay a flat fee of $3.99 so I think that is quite reasonable.

Are you all as addicted to social buying sites like Groupon as I am? I must subscribe to more than seven of these a day that flood my inbox and always tempt me with the great deals, whether I need them or not. Hope that this is a more useful one for our readers!

Enjoying the Bounty

A morning at the berry patch yielded many happy memories and 12 pounds of strawberries!

After eating as much fresh fruit as we can stomach, we made some strawberry shortcake. Why is this the first time I've ever made the biscuits myself from scratch? If I'd known how easy and delicious it could be I would've done this so much sooner!

Even bunny got to benefit from all the hulled tops - she was in heaven!

I still have a few berries left, but I don't think it's enough for a batch of jam (I want to try the strawberry lavender jam from Canning for a New Generation by Liana Krissoff). Hmmm... this may require another outing to the orchard!

Life's a Peach

How well does my husband know me? Well, when he was out for a walk on Sunday afternoon and saw that the one of the vendors at the farmer's market were giving away baskets of bruised and unsold peaches, he thought to himself "my wife could surely do something with those."
Three humongous baskets of early season peaches... I couldn't be more excited.
The possibilities are endless: jams, pies, chutneys... I'm open to suggestions and recipes. PLEASE!?
If only it hadn't suddenly turned miserably hot. And only May!

Free Samples of Tea!

I am not actually much of a tea-drinking person but I couldn't pass up FREE! I know that someone out there is so I ordered the sample and just wanted to share it with you.

If you're interested, go to teasta.com and add two tea samples to your cart that cost $3.15 each (I chose strawberry kiwi fruit tea and chocolate mint rooibos herbal tea). Then use the discount code TRYME at checkout. You do need to register on the site with your name and address but you don't need to enter in any credit card information.

I read about this from My Frugal Adventures and I did read in the comments that this sample has been offered in years past and people never received them. So I guess it depends on how protective you are about your personal information.

Any readers every heard about or used this company. Let us know in the comments if you think it's worth it to request a sample.

Free National Parks Weekend

On this long, MLK weekend, you can enjoy free entrance to all national parks. Many national parks are already free but there are some that do charge entrance fees, so go HERE to check out which national parks are in your area and ENJOY!

I'm lucky to live in a state with one of the most national parks in the country (Utah; California is first) although I won't be able to enjoy it this weekend because I'll be going out of town (plus, it is so ridiculously cold). If you can't make it to a national park this weekend, check out all the other free weekends available throughout the year.

Oishii: Granola

I am a big fan of making my own granola. It is such a forgiving recipe with almost endless variations, but it's taken a few tries to come up with one that works for me and my family.  The one below is the one we love the most and I thought it might make a nice gift this Christmas.  A few glass jars from IKEA with some ribbon make it look nice 'n pretty.

Crunchy Granola
Ingredients
2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup flaked coconut
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup sesame seed
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup coconut oil (melted)

Directions
Combine oats, nuts, coconut and seeds in one bowl.  In a separate container, mix honey and coconut oil, then pour over oat mixture and stir to combine.  Spread evenly onto a cookie sheet and bake in 300 degree oven until lightly browned, stirring occasionally.  Remove from oven and spread onto waxed paper to cool.  Store in airtight containers for up to 2 weeks.

Homemade: Sweater Weather

Back in October I finally finished my first adult-size sweater (my last personal project before the big Christmas push!).  I started it in a sweater class at my local yarn store and then found some lovely handmade glass buttons to finish it off.  It was relatively easy to knit, and though I'm actually not a big fan of the yarn (I felt pressure to choose it from a limited selection on the day of the class) and I made a few mistakes (like switching to the wrong side halfway through the sweater) I like my final project, overall.  And better yet, I feel more confident about taking on bigger projects.

The deets:
Yarn: Karabella Windy 100% cotton
Pattern: Liesl by Ysolda

Kind of like a Christmas gift to myself!

Deal of the Day! $5 Off Your $5 Purchase at Hallmark!!

I just sent off our Wabisabi Mama to the airport a couple of hours ago so she can enjoy the Christmas holiday with MamaQ & family. A few tears were shed on the car ride home - we'll miss her so much!! When are we going to get the family compound together?

Anyway, I thought I would soften the sadness with a fun deal. If you are heading out shopping in the next few days, check out if you have a Hallmark Gold Crown retailer in the area. If you do, print out this coupon for $5 off your total purchase. You may want to call ahead to your store to see if they are participating in this promotion. I wouldn't waste a trip just for this but if you are doing some shopping anyway, you may be able to score something free or close to free with this coupon like wrapping paper or an ornament. Check out the deal HERE! I was so disappointed that I missed this deal last year so I hope I can score something fun this weekend!!

Happy Shopping!!

Note: You may have to be signed up as a rewards member to do this which I am guessing you can do in the store or HERE online.

Deal of the Day! Robeez for $10.99 Shipped!!

Just couldn't pass up posting this deal. On diapers.com, you can get Robeez shoes starting at $10.99 and the shipping is free!! And they usually arrive in about 2 days. I've ordered diapers from diapers.com before and it was really convenient. And my little one has worn Robeez shoes and they are great (and so, so cute)! They even have a selection of organic shoes that are just a couple dollars more. I'm so tempted to buy some of these even though we don't really need any more shoes...maybe I should get them as a future baby shower gift for someone?

If you haven't ordered from diapers.com before, you can get an additional 10% off your order by using the code GET10PCT or you can get 20% off by using code ANNI6803 (I will get a referral credit if you use this one but please don't feel obligated).

Side Note: If you shop through Ebates, you get 4% cash back on your purchase plus an additional $5.00 sign up bonus if you are new to Ebates. Ebates is just a site that you have to set up an account with and instead of going directly to the diapers.com website (or any retail website for that matter), you enter the website through Ebates and it redirects you. After you've accumulated a certain amount cash back from Ebates, you can claim it. I used Ebates but I haven't claimed any cash back yet because I don't do much online shopping.

Pass It On!

By MamaD

I don't post much because as some of you might know, I'm a little addicted to couponing and finding deals. MamaQ recommended that I pass some of those deals onto our awesome readers. These deals are little quickies and slightly random but here they go.

$50 Voucher to Nordstrom Rack for $25 through Groupon!

I'll have to do a more comprehensive post on group buying sites one of these days because there are many but I think that Groupon is my favorite. This is a limited time deal and only lasts through the weekend but may sell out earlier. So I hope that this can satisfy that urge for materialism that some of us suffer from without breaking the bank. Click here for all the details.

$15 off your $15 purchase at the Natural Store!

This is a facebook promotion and it sounds pretty easy. You can check it out on the Natural Store's facebook page on their wall or read about it here. I'm not familiar with the Natural Store but it sounds like it is an an online retailer of natural/organic products. I found this deal on one of the deal blogs that I follow and they usually post pretty legitimate stuff so hopefully, this works.

$15 for a $25 Certificate to Kiva through Groupon!
For those who are trying to escape the materialism that sometimes accompanies the holiday season, this might be a nice gift. I am not familiar with Kiva but it sounds pretty cool. It's an organization that provides micro-loans to businesses around the world. It's also Oprah approved so I am guessing this is definitely legit. Read more about it here.

A Recent Find

I love thrifting.
And accidentally coming across an estate sale.
And finding things like this in the basement.

Antique.  Pristine condition.

 $25!

Why do I need two sewing machines?  In case a friend wants to come over and craft together.  And Mayumi is already into it.  In no time she'll be whipping up little projects as we work side by side.

Hold on, let me wipe away a happy tear...

Kid to Kid

I just discovered the greatest kids' store ever! It's called Kid to Kid. Have you heard of it? It buys gently used kids clothes, toys and furnishings. And it only accepts good quality stuff; a lot of it looks practically new.

It's one of the stores you never notice unless you have kids. When my friend told me about it, I was a little skeptical. Second hand? Don't they usually smell? And I already buy all of Olive's clothes on the cheap at stores like TJ Maxx or Burlington Coat Factory. But I decided to check it out and found they have tons of cute stuff! Of course, it's always going to be hit or miss, but for my first experience, I bought five dresses and four pairs of pants for $35! They included brand names like The Children's Place, Old Navy and Tommy Hilfiger.

I was most excited about the pants because it is really hard to find just bottoms without buying a top. And don't you think those dresses (and bloomers!) are super cute?

Their website says they have 75 stores in 21 states, so I hope there's one near you.

Deals

I have a little addiction. Well, maybe a big addiction. I like to coupon and find deals. I wrote about it a little in this post but figured that I would write a more comprehensive post later. Well, here it is. It all started out so innocently - a sojourn with the computer and some friends' blogs during naptime got me linked to this blog, Being Frugal is Fabulous (website is now defunct). And I thought, what a wonderful idea - a blog about being frugal - now that is something that is useful and that I don't need to feel guilty about spending my time on (as opposed to spending hours on Facebook looking at pictures of old high school classmates that I haven't talked to or seen since high school or craft blogs of crafts that I will never do, but that is another post for another time).

Well, it got added to my blog roll and I checked it out whenever I was on and sometimes, there was some really cool deal that I would follow up on and other times, the posts just didn't apply to me. Oftentimes, there would be multiple posts per day so I was checking it at least daily and then noticed that in the posts, there were often thanks to other bloggers for finding the deal and a link to that blogger's blog. So I started clicking away and discovering this whole community of frugal blogs and each one got added to my blog roll. It got to the point where I was probably following 6 or 7 frugality blogs. And then I started to notice that the blogs were all posting the same things from each others' blogs! I finally whittled my following down to two of the most comprehensive blogs and subscribed to their daily e-mails and took them off my blog roll so I wouldn't compulsively check them every time I went on the computer (which is sometimes multiple times per day). I figured that once a day is enough for me and any really, really hot deals can wait until the next day.

Here are the two blogs that got me started on my addiction of deal savvyness: For the Mommas and My Frugal Adventures. They both have huge followings and I wonder if there is not some friendly competition between them. But they both make dozens of posts per day about new coupons, free samples, store sales, and everything in between. I still find that a lot of what they post doesn't apply to me so there is a lot of sifting that I do. And it can be a little overwhelming at first because there are so many deals, but you have to start off small and figure out how much time and effort that you want to put into your own frugality ventures (because there is definitely an opportunity cost to this and a pretty steep learning curve to figure out how this system works - at least for me).

I just started by signing up for free samples (I joke with my husband and sisters that I have prostituted my name and address out to the online world). Then I started signing up for rewards programs - and get made fun of by my husband and friends for being part of Pampers Village and being a fan of Huggies on Facebook and anything else on there that will give me a free sample or coupon. There are also quite a few coupons available to print that I have to be careful about too because I could seriously use up all my ink on coupons for products that I won't buy or wouldn't normally buy.

Most recently though, my biggest time sink has been drugstore deals. I used to never shop at Rite Aid or Walgreens. I actually wondered who in the world shopped at those stores because they seemed so expensive and why would you go there when you can go to Target or Walmart? But I kept seeing these bloggers get these incredible deals there. So I finally jumped in and started to figure out the system.

I can't really reasonably explain how it all works in this post because it would take a while and if you are really that interested, it's better to check out the blogs that I have listed above. But I just have to post (and perhaps boast a little bit) about these incredible deals that I have got, not just from the drugstores but from everywhere. I can't even imagine paying full price for some of these things now because you can always find coupons to stack with good sales. I still consider myself quite a deal amatuer, but it is turning into a fun little hobby although I have to constantly keep myself in check to not obsess about every deal and go chasing them unreasonably. But since I'm a stay-at-home mom, I have some flexibility to make multiple, quick shopping trips.

Anyway, on to the deals...

Coupon crazy

I have a bit of an obsession.

And true to my nature I am uber-organized (read: anal-retentive) about it.

At any given time I have dozens of coupons in my wallet, ready at my fingertips.

 I love to save money!

And I'm willing to share with you some of my secret sites where I feed this obsession; then maybe you can get addicted to and we can support each other!

Budgeting: a Tri-alogue

MamaM: Now that your credit card bills are coming due, some of you may be realizing that Santa was a little too generous last Christmas. It's hard not to spend money on gifts for others, as that is how many of us have been accustomed to expressing our love and care for others.

MamaD: But even without holiday spending, it's hard to stick to a budget.

MamaQ: Which is why we're going to share some ideas on what works--and doesn't work--for us.

MamaM: Me first. Hubby and I go with the philosophy of putting aside a certain amount of savings every pay check and then pretty much just blowing the rest. It's not ideal. I wish I could stick to spending only a certain amount in certain categories, but something ALWAYS comes up that throws that off track: gifts for weddings or showers, extra grocery spending for a dinner or special event, vacations, car care, medical emergency or, hey, that really, really good sale at the mall you just can't pass up. So we have figured out what we typically spend for normal monthly expenses, left some extra for those unexpected expenses, then put the rest in savings. Only we do the savings first so we're sure that gets put away. Everything else goes on the credit card because we like to get the rewards points.

What has thrown a wrench into this plan is that I'm now on maternity leave and will be going back to my job as a bank PR manager only part-time. Time to re-do the budget. We're currently renegotiating some of our insurance expenses, changing savings allocations and trying to figure out how to not spend so much on groceries!

MamaD: The problem with those unexpected expenses is that they can take you over your budget and with a credit card balance remaining at the end of the month. My husband and I have found having little escrow accounts has been very useful. What was killing us with our budget were the variable expenses that MamaM mentioned that only came up occasionally like car and home repairs or the gifts for weddings or baby showers that come up suddenly. So we set up separate savings accounts for all those things ,which in our case was a car fund, house fund, gifts fund, and travel fund. Eventually, I would like another little account for my shopping excursions for clothing and shoes (but only if the items are on a really good sale, of course).

Before I quit my job to stay home with Lucy, we padded each account with an initial investment to get it started and now direct deposit a set amount into each account every month. When an unexpected expense comes up, we just charge it to our credit card and then reimburse the cost each month from our escrow accounts. It's not a perfect system but it has worked a lot better than what we were doing before (read: trying not to spend any money). I hate cash and debit and only use credit but it's essential we pay it off each month. If there is a remaining balance and we get a finance charge one month, we do a spending moratorium on non-essential items like going out to eat or entertainment until things are paid off and padded a bit. And then we like to use our credit card rewards for paying for Christmas gifts at the end of the year. And of course, we direct deposit money into hubby's 401K, his IRA, my IRA, and our short-term savings account as well.

MamaQ: My philosophy is to marry rich so you just don't have to worry about money at all...

MamaM: I have friends who use the cash envelope method. They carry around one of those small multi-pocketed plastic files and label them by category, such as "groceries," "eating out," "gas" and "clothing." They then allocate a certain amount of cash to each pocket and once it's gone, it's gone. It really works for them --- but for me, cash is a pain. Debit cards are tricky, too, because sometimes money is tight and with two cardholders (husband and me) debiting from the same checking account, overdrafts may occur and reconciling becomes a bit more difficult. I suppose a good solution would be to learn how to communicate with each other better...

MamaD: I feel the exact same way about debit purchases. Spending feels a bit like a juggling act for me because it comes in spurts and doesn't always match when the paychecks come in. But as long as we are not carrying a balance on our credit card, I feel fine. The only problem is the few times we have had a balance on our credit card, we have dipped into savings to prevent the finance charge. But we continue our "spending" moratorium until we reimburse whatever we took out of savings. Or in theory, that is what we try to do...it doesn't always happen that way.

MamaQ: I was just kidding about the "marry a rich guy" scheme (obviously). I pretty much charge everything to my credit card and then meticulously go through all my expenditures at the end of the month.

I know exactly how much I spent on gas, on groceries, on utilities, on entertainment, etc. If I see that we've exceeded our income or spent more than an imaginary allotment I have for each category, I make a mental note to curtail spending the next month. Not very scientific I suppose, and it requires that you have a bit of a nest-egg savings to dip into occasionally, but the truth is, this system has worked really well for us and we've been able to spend responsibly, contribute towards retirement and college savings plan, save some dough on the side, and occasionally indulge. My real philosophy is "work hard, spend responsibly, and don't be greedy." Inspiring, right?

MamaD: I think that the "don't be greedy" part is key. I am constantly trying to re-evaluate my needs versus my wants versus plain wasting of money. And of course, this varies from person to person and it's hard not to judge the person who spends their money differently than you do. So a take-home message along with all of this is don't judge your brother-in-law who spends a large portion of his money on videogames when he might think that you are equally ridiculous for spending what you do on clothes and shoes...

We'd love to hear your thoughts on what budgeting methods work for you.
