February Giveaway: Herbal Heating Packs

I have some indulgences when it is cold out: sitting down with a book or to watch a movie with a cup of tea, my knitting, and one of these herbal heating packs on my belly.
A few winters ago I started making them and they have become a staple in my house (and have been given as a gift to practically everyone I know). Toss it in the microwave or on a cookie sheet in a warm oven and soon you have some toasty goodness to throw into the foot of your bed to warm up those sheets, or to soothe away achy cramps.  They are made with cotton and stuffed with a blend of rice, flax, lavender and a little rosemary and measure about 9 x 8 inches.

I figure everyone must want one of these useful treasures, so for this month's giveaway I'd like to offer one homemade herbal heating pack to four lucky winners. To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what makes you happy and comfortable when it's cold out. Comments close in one week, at 8om EST on Tuesday, February 8th.

Good luck and thanks for participating!

When it's cold out, I stoke the woodfire stove and boil a pot for some tea. I rug up and strap on my babe to venture out to the woodshed, where we collect fuel for the evening's fire. We stay close, and keep warm; the boy falls asleep in my arms, and I am lulled by the flicker of flames.

Being from the South, I have always had a hard time with winters here. I HATE the cold. Compound that with fighting rush hour commute to get to a job I'd rather not be going to, and it makes for a pretty cranky morning.

Enter chai. But not just any chai - the one from Firehook. But not just any Firehook, the one on Capitol Hill. Over the last five winters, I have visited this Firehook almost every morning to get a cup of what I believe is the best chai in the world. What I've realized, however, is that it's not just this delicious drink that takes the chill out of a cold day. It's that over the years, I have come to know Claudia and Andrea, the ladies who work at Firehook. There's something so special and cozy about walking into a bakery where they know you by name, know a little about what's going on in your world, and know exactly what drink is going to make your morning OK.

My morning stops at Firehook have become one of my favorite things about an unfavorite season. And the days I indulge in a pumpkin spice muffin to go with the chai? That's a pretty amazing start to a cold winter day.

Definitely tea for me. I also love lighting candles and snuggling on the couch to knit - but there must be tea!

when it's cold out, I take a cup of tea to bed and take comfort in knowing I'm not out in the cold. Especially when it's snowing.
